Raw Photos
Reflection
What are the strong parts of your portfolio? The strong parts of my portfolio is my use of different angles and different types of lighting. I have people of all ages and I think I took a variety of pictures.
Describe the attributes of your best photo:My best photo is one of my great aunt who happens to be a nun. In the picture, she is slightly off to the left side of the frame, yet her face still takes up the center of the photograph. Her hand is resting on her face and she is smiling. Her face contrasts with the slightly plain background and the way her eyes and face light up when she smiles, to me, tells a story.
Describe your use of unity:I think through my pictures I attempted to show unity through facial expressions and how emotions and personality were played out through those emotions and facial expressions.
What did you learn from this project?I learned that emotions and facial expressions can really tell a lot about a person, and those things can teach and show you characteristics about people you never would have originally known. I also discovered that while you can attempt to recreate a moment in time, that moment will never be the same as the first time, especially a rare moment. It's best to capture it naturally than to try to recreate the moment or miss it completely.

What could you have done better on this project?I probably could've taken them at more varying times of day instead of the majority being during the afternoon.
Describe the values in your photo:I believe that the soft lighting and the contrast of the light backdrop and her darker toned skin along with the brightness of her eyes. It shows how wonderful of a person she is in the way her smile lights up her face.
Describe your use of emphasis:I put a lof of emphasis on emotion and this shows through out my picture collection. My strongest pictures show emotion, and while some of them are just facial expressions a lot of them also show personality through the facial expressions.
Describe your design process:I made a list, but once the time came I didn't use a lot of the things I put on my list. I found it to be the most fun and the most sucessful to just snap pictures whenever the timing felt right. Some of my pictures are posed, but the ones that aren't posed are not my strongest, nor my favorite pictures. I don't think any of my top 25 pictures are posed and that's because I tried to capture rare moments of facial expression and emotion, and I'm happy with the way my design process went.
Was this project worthwhile? To me, yes, because I feel that I can learn a lot about an individual through the lens of my camera. It's amazing to take pictures and think, no that's not a good photo, and go back on them later and see the raw emotion of someone through that photo. I thought that telling us to take shots that aren't posed was a good thing, because non-posed shots show more of a natural personality and raw emotion. This was a very enjoyable project.
